Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our health.  If we had a dollar for every time a person came into our Brighton Chiropractic clinic say that they “slept funny” and now can’t turn their head, we would have a lot of dollars!  If you want expert advice about your pillow, book in now at our Brighton Chiropractic clinic.  We can measure you up, and fit you with our world class adjustable height contour pillows.

Is a flat pillow or a contour pillow best?

It is always best to sleep on a contour pillow as it will give far more support to your neck whether you are laying on your side or back.  A contour pillow will make sure that the mid part of your neck does not sag while you are sleeping on your side.  The contour will reduce the chances of you tucking your chin during the night, creating forward head posture.  When choosing a pillow make sure that it is not too high or too low for you.  When sleeping on your side, get someone to check your head height and make sure that your spine is in the most neutral position possible.

Is it ok to sleep on my stomach?

Absolutely not.  Sleeping on your stomach will put far more pressure on your neck and lower back than sleeping on your side or back.  We do advise that when sleeping on your side you have a pillow in between your arms (hugging a pillow) and if required a pillow between your knees and ankles.

Should I have a hard or soft mattress?

It is always advisable to have a firmer mattress.  That will give far more support to your spine than a mattress that is too soft and sags.  It is advisable to spin your mattress every month so as that you don’t end up with one area that is sagging.

The best tips for sleeping

  • Sleep on your side or back
  • If sleeping on your side, keep a pillow between your arms
  • Place a pillow between your knees and ankles when laying on your side
  • Sleep on a firm mattress that will support your frame
  • Use a high quality contour pillow
  • Change your pillow every 2 years
  • Keep your bedroom cool

The things to avoid when sleeping

  • Sleep on your stomach
  • Place your arm underneath your pillow to support your head
  • Tuck your chin to your chest while you sleep
  • Sleep on an old mattress that sags
  • Use a pillow that is too high or too low for your neck and shoulders
  • Have a pillow only between your knees, this will put added pressure on your pelvic joints
